Volunteer Pumpkin?

Close-up of Sweet Banana Pepper bloom

Some are thinking this is pumpkin. I'm scratching my head and wondering where it could've come from. Sure, we dumped a few pumpkins in the woods in the backyard but that's far away. I really hope this isn't pumpkin. The bugs will kill it flat in no time! But uh.. Here it is... taking over the bed.

Guess we'll see in time of what it produces.

  1. Yup, does look like a cucurbit...! I'd much rather have volunteer pumpkins than a giant patch of volunteer sweet corn... I'm not a big corn dude, I guess, but I love pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pumpkin empanadas, pumpkin ravioli, pumpkin gnocchi, pumpkin biscuits... Mmmmm...

  2. I used to love growing pumpkins and I grew them for years until I moved to NC. It was a nightmare keeping the plants and pumpkins alive here. I was so protective that I tried sevin and couldn't save them at all. The bugs mean serious business here. There's bugs that attack the plant, there's bugs that drill holes in the pumpkins, etc.

I am so hoping this isn't pumpkin... I'll take squash or something else.

Though if the flowers turn out to be white, then it has to be birdhouse gourds. hehe. I know they grew in this bed before and keep making random appearances every summer.
